In a significant step towards enhancing local governance, the Wa Municipal Assembly organized an inauguration ceremony for the Sixth Wa Urban Council on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. The event, held at the Wa Community Center, marked the official swearing-in of the new council members, underscoring a commitment to transparency and accountability in local administration.
The ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries including Hon. Tahiru Issahaku Moomen, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), and Hajia Pognaa Fati Issaka Koray, Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD). Their presence highlighted the importance of the occasion and the crucial role the Urban Council plays in the governance of the Wa Municipality.
Mohammed A. Sensau, Assistant Director 1 and Secretary to the Council, guided the newly appointed members through the Model Standing Orders for the Urban Council. He emphasized the integral relationship between the Urban Council and the Municipal Assembly, noting that their operations are interdependent.
In his address, Hon. Tahiru Issahaku Moomen urged the newly elected councilors to prioritize their community responsibilities over partisan politics. He outlined the core functions of the Urban Council, emphasizing their role in:
- Supporting revenue mobilization.
- Providing recommendations and input into the Assembly’s development plans and budgets.
- Protecting the environment from pollution.
- Engaging regularly with community members to inform decisions on local developments.
- Monitoring, coordinating, and implementing projects and programs.
The ceremony culminated with the swearing-in of the councilors-elect, who pledged to uphold the oaths of Office, Secrecy, and Allegiance. This solemn commitment marks the beginning of their tenure, dedicated to fostering progress and development within the Wa Municipality.
